How to Read Your Prescription
Optical prescriptions can look confusing at first. Here is a simple breakdown of every field and what it means for your vision.
Sample Prescription
| Eye | SPH | CYL | AXIS | ADD | PRISM |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| OD (Right) | -2.50 | -0.75 | 180 | --- | --- |
| OS (Left) | -3.00 | -1.00 | 175 | --- | --- |
SPH (Sphere)
Corrects nearsightedness (minus) or farsightedness (plus). This is the main correction power of your lens.
Negative number = nearsighted (trouble seeing far). Positive number = farsighted (trouble seeing close).
CYL (Cylinder)
Corrects astigmatism, where your eye is more oval-shaped than round. This value is always zero or negative.
If you have no CYL value, it means no astigmatism. This is common and totally normal!
AXIS
The angle of your astigmatism correction, measured in degrees from 1 to 180. Only needed if you have a CYL value.
AXIS only matters when CYL is present. Without CYL, ignore the AXIS field entirely.
ADD (Addition)
Extra magnification for reading, used in progressive or bifocal lenses. Usually prescribed for age 40 and above.
ADD is always a positive number, typically between +0.75 and +3.50. If you do not have it, you likely need single-vision lenses.
PRISM & BASE
Corrects eye alignment issues by directing light to the correct position. Most people do not have prism in their prescription.
Only enter prism if it is specifically written on your prescription. Base direction (IN/OUT/UP/DOWN) tells where the prism correction points.
Common Questions
OD vs OS
OD (Oculus Dexter) is your right eye. OS (Oculus Sinister) is your left eye. OD is always listed first.
Where to find PD
PD (Pupillary Distance) is sometimes on a separate line or may not be on your prescription at all. Ask your optician or measure it at home.
Prescription expiry
Prescriptions are typically valid for 1-2 years. If yours is older, we recommend getting a fresh eye exam before ordering new lenses.
