Children's Vision: When to Schedule Their First Eye Exam

By Dr. Nisha Patel
Paediatric

Good vision is essential for a child's development, learning, and social interaction. Yet many vision problems go undetected because children assume everyone sees the world the way they do.

Recommended Eye Exam Schedule

  • First exam: at 6 months of age
  • Second exam: at 3 years of age
  • Before starting school: at 5-6 years
  • Every 1-2 years throughout school years
  • More frequently if issues are detected

Signs Your Child May Have a Vision Problem

  • Sitting too close to the TV or holding books very close
  • Frequent eye rubbing or blinking
  • Covering one eye or tilting the head
  • Complaints of headaches or tired eyes
  • Difficulty concentrating in school
  • Avoidance of reading or close-up activities
